Ed runs out of onions and sends Steve and Dennis on a quest to Cheap Co. Will they survive the chaos that comes along with a “quick” trip in and out? Maybe? But only if they can find a parking spot first.
This Pizza Bros episode was inspired by a true life adventure to “Cheap Co.” Pre-covid everyone was packed in the store like a bunch of sardines and the eb-n-flow of the people was likened unto moving water.
Difficulties
Trying to figure out how to illustrate the scenes where Steve and Dennis are in the in Cheap Co parking lot was the most difficult part of creating this episode. I had to think about what perspectives would work visually for pixel art. The great thing about using pixel art is that it helps you narrow down your options to the most simple form of story telling.
Comedy Writing and Pixel Art Coming Together
Illustrating where the “sea of people” turns into an actual stormy sea with mohawk shark guy was where we wanted to visually portray what was actually going on inside of Steve and Dennis’s heads when they became overwhelmed by the mass of people. The pixel art stormy sea was a visual representation of what they were emotionally and perceptually experiencing.
Most Fun to Create
Most fun to create using pixel art was the after math of their Cheap Co experience. Steve and Dennis black out and wake up (wash up) in front of the store covered in seaweed and star fish. They try to put the pieces of the story together to figure out how they got the bag of onions, but can’t actually remember getting them.
